New wind farms

In 2007 E-Connection secured, on behalf of two wind farm operating companies, all permits required for the construction and operation of three new wind turbines on the isle of Neeltje Jans, part of the Oosterschelde flood barrier. One turbine on the quay at the Vluchthaven for Windpark Neeltje-Jans BV and two wind turbines on the southern harbor dam near the Roompot locks for Windpark Roompotsluis BV.
For Windpark Roggeplaat BV the permits haven been secured for the repowering and operation on Roggenplaat, another isle in the flood barrier. Here 12 old Enercon turbines (commissioned in 1992) will be replaced by four new Enercon turbines.

Clean energy for more than 18.500 households
Jointly the seven new wind turbines will produce on average more than 61 million kWh per year. That equals the yearly electricity consumption of over 18.500 Dutch households.

After years of project development the last permits required for the construction and operation of these repowering projects were granted in 2009.

Nature conservation
Because construction will take place near protected nature conservation areas special precautions, determined in close operation with the relevant authorities, will be taken prior to and during the construction to protect wildlife and endangered plants.
To prevent disruption of breeding birds due to construction activities, prior to the start of the breeding season the work will be temporarily made unattractive with colored ribbons. The birds will look for other quiet sites nearby to build their nests. This will prevent that breeding birds will be harassed and leave their nests, thus spoiling the hatch.
Sites were endangered and protected plants grow have been identified. During construction work protective measures will be taken to prevent damage to the existing plants.

Construction in a major flood barrier
Because the sites are on the flood barrier no construction activities are allowed between April 1st and October 1st of any year. Immediately after April 1, 2006 ground work for the foundations will start. Before October 1st the installation and commissioning will be completed and the dike and the areas around the wind turbines will be fully repaired.

Connection to the regional and national grid
The power produced by the wind turbines is delivered to the regional and national grid. The power is transported from the Oosterschelde flood barrier to the grid connection point at Middelburg via a newly laid 20 kV ground cable. This connection was engineered and laid by E-Connection in 2006 for the wind turbines that were installed in 2006. The cables follow a 21 km route from Walcheren via the Veerse Dam across Noord-Beveland and on to the Oosterschelde flood barrier. For the seven new wind turbines the transport cable is commissioned to the regional utility.
