Wind Resource
A good energy output of a wind farm does not only depend on a fine windy year or a high availability!
The suitability of a potential site can be determined by a wind resource analysis and an energy yield calculation. These calculations are based on the long term wind resource data of the site, the roughness of the surrounding terrain, any obstacles in the vicinity, the layout of the wind farm and the characteristics of the wind turbine(s).
With these data the expected average annual energy output of the wind farm can be determined. The expected energy yield of different wind farm layouts and/or different types of wind turbine can be calculated too.
In The Netherlands E-Connection executed wind resource calculations for over 300 MW of installed wind power.
Also for projects in the United Kingdom, Armenia and for offshore locations in the North Sea, E-Connection analysed the wind resource and calculated the expected energy output.
In 1999 E-Connection drafted a validated wind resource chart of The Netherlands for NOVEM. For each site the average wind speed at various (hub)heights was determined.
In Armenia in 2000 and 2001 E-Connection undertook wind measurements at five sites and two different hub heights. Based on these measurements and long term meteorological data available in Armenia it was possible to determine the wind resource for these sites. Since a wind farm has been commissioned and is operating at one of the sites.
For among others Prinses Amelia Windpark (formerly known as Q7-WP), 24 km from shore, and for the OWEZ wind farm (formerly known as Near Shore Windpark), 15 km from shore, E-Connection undertook detailed wind resource analysis and energy output calculations, based on long term wind data of three offshore meteo stations.
